The Toll House Motel - Vampire Hotel to the Undead!
One of the strangest legends of the Queen City involves the Toll House Motel on Morehead Street, Uptown, torn down circa 2007-2008.
Before it was destroyed to make room for "progress" the motel -- an old motor lodge of a bygone era of travel -- was reputed to be home to secretive vampire denizens.
But not just any vampire denizens.
The residents of the Vampire Motel of Charlotte were reputed to dress like 1920's era gangsters in zoot suits and hats. And they were seen, too, driving 1920s-styled cars. We're talking Ford Motel T's, Duesenberg Model J's, Bugatti Type 41's, etc.
Importantly, the vampires and their vehicles were never seen by day, only by dark of night.
By day, the Toll House Motel was a "dead zone," creepily and eerily quiet -- like a tomb. But by night the motel and its environs came to life with the zoot-suited gangsters in their cars, and the streets echoed with the strains of jazz music.
